About this tool

Converting an image changes both its extension and the way the data is stored inside. The same photograph can differ several times over in file size depending on whether you save it as JPG or PNG, and whether a transparent background survives depends on it too. Some upload forms accept only certain extensions; some applications still cannot open WebP. The choice comes up more often than you would expect.

The rule of thumb is short. Photographs, with many colours blending smoothly, belong in JPEG. Anything needing transparency, or with hard edges like text and diagrams, belongs in PNG. Anything published on the web where size matters is a good candidate for WebP. This tool moves freely between all three, and lets you set quality when you pick JPEG or WebP. Your image is never uploaded. Editing and saving both happen inside your browser, so you can open files you would not want to hand to a server — photos with faces in them, internal documents, anything sensitive.

How to use

  1. Click "Pick an image & start" to open a file.
  2. Open File > Export.
  3. Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
  4. For JPEG or WebP, set the quality slider to balance size against fidelity. PNG is lossless, so no slider appears.
  5. Save, and the file downloads with the chosen extension.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the background turn white when I convert PNG to JPG?
JPEG cannot store transparency, so there is nowhere to record those pixels and they are filled with white instead. Keep logos and icons as PNG or WebP. If the background was already white, converting to JPG is a good way to cut the file size sharply.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG is lossless, but the detail JPEG already discarded does not come back — you just get a much larger file. Convert to PNG when you need transparency or want to keep editing without further loss, not to recover quality.
Can everyone open WebP?
In browsers, yes — Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge have all supported it for years. Some older image viewers, document editors and phone galleries still cannot. WebP for the web, JPEG for files you hand to other people.
Can I convert GIF or HEIC files?
If your browser can open the format, you can load it and export as PNG, JPEG or WebP. HEIC files from an iPhone usually open in Safari but may not elsewhere. Animated GIFs load as their first frame only, so the animation is not preserved.
Does converting strip capture data?
Yes. Exporting redraws the canvas into a new file, so the original EXIF does not follow. That is helpful if you are publishing photos and would rather not broadcast where they were taken. Keep the original if you need the metadata.
How much do the formats differ in size?
For a photograph, PNG is largest, JPEG a fraction of it, and WebP typically another 20-30% smaller again. That ordering only holds for photographs, though. For flat-colour graphics and screenshots, PNG is often the smallest — each format is good at a different kind of picture.
What format should I send to a print shop?
Ask them first; requirements vary. High-quality JPEG or PNG is generally accepted. If they specify CMYK colour or 300 dpi, this tool will not get you there — that needs dedicated print software.
Can I convert many files at once?
Automate > Batch takes multiple files, one format and one quality setting, and exports them together. Useful for converting a whole folder to WebP.
